Free for people. Licensed for business.
QuickAI's code is public, and free to use, study and change for any noncommercial purpose under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. Using it in or for a business needs a commercial license.
Do I need a license?
| You are | What you need |
|---|---|
| Using QuickAI for yourself: learning, writing, hobby projects, private use | Nothing, it's free |
| A student, teacher or researcher doing study or public research | Nothing, it's free |
| A charity, school, university, public research body, public health or safety organization, environmental organization or government institution | Nothing, it's free |
| A company, freelancer or sole trader using QuickAI for your work, internally or for clients | A commercial license |
| Shipping QuickAI, or a product built on it, to customers | A commercial license |
| Offering QuickAI as part of a paid service | A commercial license |
The license text decides; this table is a plain-language summary of it. Not sure which row you're in? Ask, and a short email usually settles it.
Source-available, not open source
Anyone can read QuickAI's code, build it, change it and share their changes for noncommercial use. That makes it source-available. It isn't open source in the strict sense, because open-source licenses allow commercial use and this one asks businesses for a license. That is how the work is paid for: there are no ads, no data to sell and no paid tier for individuals.
What a commercial license covers
- Using QuickAI's own code in your organization, on your desktops and on your servers (
quickai-run). - Terms, scope and support agreed for your organization: how many people or machines, deployment help, and how updates reach you.
What keeps its own license
A commercial license covers QuickAI's own code. Everything else keeps its own terms:
- Bundled: llama.cpp's
llama-server(MIT) and the Bonsai 8B and 1.7B models (Apache-2.0). - Installed only when you ask: Ollama (MIT), ComfyUI (GPL-3.0) and Open WebUI (its own license).
- Models you download: each comes with its own license. Some don't allow commercial use or exclude some regions, so check a model's license before using it at work. QuickAI's Recommended list shows each one.
Contributing
Contributions are welcome and are accepted under a contributor license agreement, so that QuickAI can stay available under both licenses. You keep the copyright of your work.
